Cabrini Basketball Host Special Olympics in Nerney Field House

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men and women’s basketball teams hosted Delaware County Special Olympics athletes in Nerney Field House for a basketball clinic on Tuesday, April 6. The Cavaliers welcomed more than 50 athletes, ages 10 to 40, to the Dixon Center for lessons in fundamentals and fun.

“We were really looking forward to this event because it our chance to give back to the community,” said Cabrini women’s basketball head coach Kate Pearson. “We are very fortunate in the opportunities we are given as coaches and student-athletes. Tonight was about showing our gratitude and teaching some basketball.”

The Cabrini men and women’s teams opened the night with instruction stations, including defense, shooting, passing and dribbling. The clinic concluded with the Special Olympic athletes playing a full-court, five-on-five scrimmage against a select number of Cavaliers.

Some of the participating members of the Blue & White included Maryellen Anastasio, Dom Farrello, Lucas Gulotta and Kate Walck. Greg Zabel emceed the event and provided public address announcing during the scrimmage.

The Delaware County Special Olympics basketball teams compete in three-on-three and five-on-five games against teams from counties across Pennsylvania. The Cavaliers also hosted the same clinic during the 2008-09 academic year.
