ASTON, PA: There’s still time to join the Colonial States Athletic Conference as it partakes in the 2012 Eastern Polar Plunge, hosted by the PA Special Olympics at Neshaminy State Park, near Bensalem, PA, this Saturday, January 28th.
Over 50 student-athletes and athletic department personnel from across the CSAC have pledged to participate, with all funds raised going directly toward the Pennsylvania Special Olympics. As of Tuesday, the CSAC participants have raised over $3,000, with over 50 people committed to plunging, and the number continues to climb as the event draws nearer.
In addition to the Philadelphia-based Eastern Polar Bear Plunge, Notre Dame University of Maryland is participating in the 16th Annual Maryland Polar Bear Plunge on the same day, at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, MD, which will benefit Special Olympics-Maryland.
In 2011, the Special Olympics formed a partnership with NCAA Division-III, and CSAC Interim Commissioner Jennifer Dubow said that participating in the Polar Plunge is a perfect way for the conference to align with the NCAA in its Special Olympics initiative while setting aside institutional rivalries, for one day at least.
“Not only are we able to benefit the Special Olympics on a pretty large scale,” said Dubow, “but we’re able to bring our institutions together in such a fun and unique event. For one day, they’ll all be part of the same team.”
Those willing to make the plunge into the Delaware River can register up until the 1 p.m. plunge, while donations toward the plungers will be accepted up through the event.
The Eastern Polar Plunge benefits nearly 20,000 athletes in PA Special Olympics, the state’s largest year-round organization devoted to sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
