Saturday's postseason wrap
Saturday was a busy day for Colonial States Athletic Conference members in the postseason, as the Cabrini men's lacrosse team and Centenary softball team were each active in the NCAA Division-III playoffs, while the Marywood men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, and softball teams, as well as the Neumann softball squad, were active in the ECAC postseason.
In the men's lacrosse NCAA second round, Cabrini avenged an early season loss by defeating Dickinson College on the road by a 12-7 count, behind four poitns apiece from Cory Elmer and Bobby Thorp. The Cavaliers will now face top-ranked Salisbury on Wednesday in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
In Union, NJ, the Centenary softball team saw its season come to a close with an 8-0 loss to Alvernia University in NCAA regional playoff action. The CSAC-champion Cyclones went 1-2 in the 2012 NCAA postseason, and close the year with a 28-15 record.
The Marywood University men's lacrosse team scored four unanswered goals over the final 7:54 of play to secure a 10-9 comeback win over Misericordia in the opening round of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic playoffs in Westminster, MD. Marcus Janda scored the game-winner with one second left in regulation to send the Pacers to Sunday's ECAC title game against host McDaniel College.
In the ECAC South softball tournament, host Marywood was eliminated after falling 3-0 to Penn State-Altoona and 8-1 to conference foe Neumann. The Knights went 1-1 on the day, as they recovered from an early morning 4-3 loss to top-seeded Catholic University to defeat the Pacers. Neumann will now face Penn State-Altoona in Sunday morning's semifinal, with the winner moving on to face Catholic in the afternoon championship game.
In the ECAC Mid-Atlantic women's lacrosse tourney, also hosted by Marywood, the Pacers won a defensive battle against Washington & Jefferson, 7-6. In the back-and-forth affair, W&J tied the game at 5-all with just over 17 minutes left in regulation, before Diana D'Achille and Brooke Bondurant scored twice in a two-minute span late in the second half to seal the win. D'Achille scored a game-high four goals for the Pacers (16-4), who will host Alvernia University on Sunday in the championship title bout at 10:00am.
