The Cabrini College men's lacrosse team defeated next door neighbor Eastern University 19-3 in the opening round of the 2012 NCAA Division-III National Tournament, while the Cavalier women fell 22-7 to Gettysburg College, ranked third in the nation, in the NCAA women's lacrosse tourney opener.
In the men's tilt, Cabrini led just 2-1 over the Eagles at the end of the first quarter, but the Cavaliers would then put the game away in decisive fashion, out-scoring Eastern 9-0 in the second quarter to take an 11-2 halftime lead. The Cavaliers would then out-score the Eagles 4-1 over each of the next two periods to coast to the victory. Brian Hill led the charge for Cabrini with a game-high seven points, on four goals and three assists, while Damien Sobieski and Cory Elmer each added three goals apiece. In all, eight players posted two or more points for Cabrini, while goalie Erick Zarzecki made six saves on nine shots to earn the win. The victory advances Cabrini (16-2) to the second round, where they will face Dickinson College on Saturday. The Red Devils were one of just two teams to defeat the Cavaliers on the year, winning a 12-11 decision over Cabrini on Feb. 29th.
In the women's tourney, Gettysburg came out of the gates on fire, taking a 6-0 lead eight minutes into play, before Melissa Scanzano tallied the Cavaliers' first goal. Gettysburg would respond by out-scoring Cabrini 10-4 over the final 20 minutes of the first half to go into the intermission up 16-5. The Cavaliers' Sarah Means scored the first goal of the second half, but the Bullets would put the game away by scoring six of the games' final seven goals to score the 22-7 win. Scanzano led the way for Cabrini with three goals, while Means, Sara Carzo, Jacky McDermott, and Katie Slonaker each scoring once. The loss was the first for Cabrini since April 3rd, and the Cavaliers end the year with a 10-8 overall record.
